A Sign of Fall?
A Sign of Fall?

Manufactured Drama
Being a caregiver is giving me significant insight into parenting and not in a good way. R. and I wage a running battle over her pills. Some of you may remember the incident of the dropped blood pressure medication that forced me to empty out the kitchen at 11 o’clock at night looking for the [...]

Nostalgia Musings at the End of a Hard Week
On Facebook I referred to the last five days as “Epic Fail Week.” It got better, but I do question any five-day span of time when your crowning achievement is finding a sink aerator that works — on the fourth try.
There were business wrangles that tested my temper, personal wrangles that measured my spirit, and [...]

Roofing Saga Resolution
This afternoon the insurance company called to let me know about a small monthly increase. In the conversation the matter of the roof came up and, as it turns out, the other woman I spoke to was in error. No claim has been opened. I don’t have to do a blessed thing until I’m ready [...]

Thinking of a Political Dynasty
Quick personal note,: To heck with the weight loss diet pills, give me sweat! Yep, Day 620 after a full eight hours of sleep, something I almost never get any more. I think that feat was aided in part by the herbal sleeping pill and in part by signs of forward motion on a project [...]

Jack Daniels, Shotgun Shells, and Chocolate
Thanks to all who sent email after my last post. I’m not contemplating slitting my wrists. I really was struck by the irony of flipping on the radio on a day like I was having and have that song come wafting out.
But yes, I do seem to be in one of those phases where life [...]

Monday: Epic Fail
Anti-depressants the size of horse supplements couldn’t have made this Monday a good day, it was epic fail on all levels — in fact it still is, with little sign of potential improvement as evening comes on.
While I recognize that there are days when said substance is just gonna hit the fan, does it [...]

Cat Hair Duct Tape Housekeeping 101
Talk about your ephedra free weight loss methods! I spent more than an hour on my hands and knees this afternoon using an upholstery attachment to get the embedded cat hair out of R.’s white living room rug. When I was finished, I was more tired than coming off a 22-mile ride yesterday.
And no, I [...]

Elmer Kelton: Texan Novelist, Cowboy Gentleman
Never one time have I spoken in public or taught a class that I have not grappled with speech anxiety. Until I open my mouth and get the first words out, I suffer agonies of nervousness. Conducting an interview is just as bad — sometimes worse — because often the interviewer is not in charge [...]

22 Miles After Seven-Week Hiatus
Click thumb for larger image.
I set out this morning on Slim before the sun came up, led tail lights blazing. After seven weeks off the bike, I didn’t know how my legs would hold up, but those extra long sessions on the Bicycle Going Nowhere paid off. It was perfect biking weather (about 70 degrees [...]
