In the Backyard with the Empress

Last night at 9:30 I found myself in the backyard dealing with the Empress and the landscaping lights. (This is probably episode 7,895 of Rana, The Empress, and the Landscaping Lights.)
The lights did not come on as scheduled and I was summoned to check the timer box. This would be the same timer box on [...]

You Gotta Have Heart

This morning, feeling like something of a slacker, I let myself sleep until 5 o’clock. Before I got out of bed, I reached over and flipped open the shutters, looking at the driveway lit by the glow of our outdoor lighting and finding the normally busy intersection empty and deserted.
I’ve come to appreciate the stillness [...]

Ruminations on Personal Caves

Recently I was amused to read an entry on a friend’s journal detailing how he and his wife pitched their camping gear in the living room when a planned weekend outing didn’t turn out as . . . well . . . planned.
Ever since my Mother collected Keebler’s box tops and sent off for a [...]

Assault to the Senses – And the Bumper

Yesterday ended on a more complicated note than I would have preferred (one that may put me in the category of needing addiction treatment since it took about 37 miles this morning to burn off the residual frustration.) While pulling in to the parking lot at the Magic Cat Food Store, I clipped the back [...]

Perspective

After completing my most ambitious session yet on the Bicycle Going Nowhere (35.68 miles in 130 minutes), I walked into the kitchen, red-faced and sweating, to find Mike comfortably reclining in this position in R.’s chair. Now I ask you, which one of us is the higher life form?

A Remake of “Gaslight” Here at Casa Eclectic

Oh come on, you know “Gaslight.” With Ingrid Bergman? Her husband tries to convince her she’s insane by making the flame in the gas jets go up and down? Well, it seems I’m just that scheming and maniacal, judging by the surrealistic exchange I had with R. earlier today.
In these past few weeks as I’ve [...]

History, Obsession, Personal Best

From time to time I look through the history file on the ole laptop just in case I’ve wandered into areas of the Internet that could be construed as incriminating. Never mind that no one else ever touches this machine. Remember, the first rule of paranoia is to base no crazy notion on reality, one [...]

Some Thoughts on “Into the Wild”

Yesterday R. and I watched the 2007 film, “Into the Wild” starring Emile Hirsch. The true story chronicles the life of Chris McCandless who dropped out of “society” after his graduation from Emory University to follow his destiny to the ultimate evolution of Thoreau’s Walden experiment taken to the extreme in the wilds of Alaska.
Some [...]

Mirror Image

As the caption on flickr says, that’s not a reflection in the patio door, but rather Midnight, our feral friend, spending some time with Mike.
She won’t let me come near her yet (maybe about 6 ft.), but she likes the sound of my voice, blinking her eyes in appreciation when I [...]

Feeling the Renewal of Spring

With the coming of spring this year I feel change and renewal in and around me with an unusual degree of intensity. I attribute this to multiple sources. Yesterday, I told a friend who has known me longer and better than anyone that God, or the Universe, or The Intelligence That is Greater than We [...]
