Dance of the Buckeye
This afternoon a Buckeye danced across the kitchen window, flirting with me as it wandered from blossom to blossom. For a week now it’s teased me with those lovely orange and white stripes and blue and yellow spots. Out I’d go, camera in hand. Away it would fly, wings to the wind.
But today [...]

Rana vs. The Refrigerator
Unless you are one of the people who has stood in the light of this refrigerator door and said, “Rana, you HAVE to do something about this fridge,” you may not fully appreciate this photo.
Last night, frustrated by having missed the only butterfly that appeared between rain showers thanks to a fogged lens, and [...]

Killing the Kilowatt: Six Month Report
Most people don’t get happy when their electric bill arrives, and compared to rates in other parts of the country, we are still laboring in the salt mines of TXU Electric. However, I have finally gotten the monthly bill (we are on an average plan) below $200.
Those of you who have been following my Kill [...]

Dave Lived in a Shack
When Dave sold his mother’s place, the big white house where he and his brother John were raised, he kept a corner of the lot with a little stand of mesquite trees. That’s where he put up the structure my Mother routinely and derisively referred to as the “shack.”
It was difficult to decide what Mother [...]

Of Art and Anoles
Today’s project took me to Office Depot for adhesive cork board squares to turn the side of the refrigerator into an “art gallery.” As I’ve been photographing the butterflies the new bushes are attracting, I’ve been using magnets to put the photos on the fridge. This morning R. asked if I could come up [...]

Hummingbird Moth
This tiny creature is a Snowberry Clearwing Butterfly Moth. On at least two occasions its brethren have led me all over the Botanic Gardens in a vain attempt to get a decent photograph.
I almost fell over when I started in the house from talking with the Empress in the driveway (about the impending [...]

The Brown Truck Place
This morning I drove over to F.’s Beauty Emporium for a haircut. While I was sitting in the chair a nice-looking elderly gentleman pushed his wife in the door in a wheelchair. She was extremely frail but smiled happily at everyone as he took her back to the shampoo area.
When he came back by he [...]

Just Call Me the AV Nerd (A Story and Two Reviews)
The last two days have been so consumed with AV tasks and projects I’m about ready to put tape on one temple of my glasses and buy a pocket protector. (Oh come on, you remember that kid as well as I do.)
The Wookie and I made an executive decision to bestow R.’s Top Secret Birthday [...]

Question Mark
It seems appropriate to me that this gorgeous butterfly should be named the Question Mark since that is what the new bushes have become for us. “What will come fluttering up today?”
I’ve started printing out a photo of each variety I “capture” and putting it on the refrigerator door. At the end of [...]
