Cow Creek Spear Point
Choosing nightly television fare around here can often represent something of a challenge. On Monday’s however, PBS helps out enormously with a 7 o’clock airing of “Antiques Roadshow” followed by “History Detectives.” As I’ve said before, anything that is not a “Law & Order” episode ranks high on my list. This week the Detectives worked [...]

Border Radio
I recently acquired the three volume album, “The Carter Family on Border Radio – 1939.” XET was a big ole blaster station broadcasting out of Monterrey Mexico back then. The Carters recorded their segments at their winter home in Texas and shipped acetate disks across the border for the nightly “Good Neighbor Get Together.” R. [...]

Friday Night Lights
Friday night I received an email from an old high school friend. “I decided to stay home and eat a frozen pizza,” she said, explaining that she was missing the season opener football game at our alma mater. Her daughter had a volleyball tournament the next day and like many beleaguered parents who shuttle their [...]

Sunday Synopsis
Sitting in a coffee shop on Saturday morning I wondered who the people were by weekday light. Runners and walkers sat together recuperating, relaxed and disheveled. The woman at the next table snapped her newspaper. I caught sight of the headline, “The Honeymoon’s Over.”
The current store promotional asked, “Why can’t a quiet moment be an [...]

In Search of Banality, Ep. III
When last we saw Rana and her Inner Mediator discussing the banalization of Eclectic Mind, that voice of guidance had just said, “This might be easier if I went over the biggest potential danger zone with you.”
“Okay, go for it.”
“Under no circumstances will any discussion of that process by which some people submit their names [...]

In Search of Banality, Ep. II
In the last episode of “In Search of Banality,” Rana said to her Inner Mediator, “I’ve always had a deep and abiding interest in the evolution of dust bunnies.”
“Do not ever let me hear you use that word again!”
“What word?”
“The ‘e’ word. We are very open to the possibility that dust bunnies were created and [...]

In Search of Banality, Ep. I
My Inner Mediator and I sat together last night discussing how to keep Eclectic Mind nice and banal from now on. I’d toss out a topic and he’d cluck his tongue and point out ways my idea could be offensive and controversial.
Finally I said, “Paper towels! How about I write something about paper towels?”
“Too controversial,” [...]

It is with an enormous sigh of relief that I resume posting here at Eclectic Mind. Without question there’s been a hole in my daily routine. I cannot thank all of you enough for contacting me in various ways and expressing your support of this site and of me. I especially appreciate the numerous emails [...]

We Are Almost There
I think by tomorrow real posting will be able to resume. There are just a few kinks to iron out with skins and how various browsers react to this and that. Julie is doing a magnificent job — as always. Once we’re back in business the only real change you’ll see is that all comments [...]
