Vignette: Bench Girl

If I happen to drive by the local barbecue joint between four and five in the afternoon I see her, Bench Girl. Mentally challenged and greatly overweight, she sits with headphones on and a yellow Walkman CD player clutched in her hands. She rocks to the beat of the silent music with a big smile [...]

The Day I Adopted Them . . .

. . . I asked Mike and Andy’s foster mother if they were bad to climb. She said, “Oh, no not at all.” I thought this meant they didn’t climb. I now realize she was trying to tell me they’re really, really good at climbing.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day, an outgrowth of the War Between the States, was first observed in 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Some even attribute the origins of the day to the activities of groups like the fictitious organization with the scrumptious name Margaret Mitchell [...]

Walk In The Rain

Click thumb for larger image.
Yesterday during a lull in the rain I took a quick walk through the Botanic Gardens looking for rain soaked blooms. I’m to put some photos up in the restaurant down there in July and don’t have the images I want yet — too much time spent in the Justin Arena, [...]

Something I’ve Been Meaning . . .

. . . to post for a week. If this isn’t proof of the passing years I don’t know what is. My buddy M. and I used to get in trouble as kids for leap frogging this bush. As you can see, that was a while ago.

The Empress And The Yard Crew

Bless her heart, the Empress just can’t get a peaceful last few months as reigning homeowner’s association president. The Imperial Presence is much displeased with the new yard crew and is seeking opinions up and down the driveway. You see about six weeks ago Brad, the chief of the old yard crew, announced that his [...]

Latches and Closet Doors

Today’s first project involved putting a hook and eye latch on the door of my closet. Mike and Andy find closets fascinating, to the point that I long ago installed a latch on the door of my office. A couple of nights ago, however, they discovered that the combined locksmith powers of two gray cats [...]

Just What We Needed Today

Oh. My. God. What a day. Well, actually, it started last night after we watched a film with Missy J. and I started to help R. back to the bedroom. She habitually drops her newspaper one page at a time by her chair as she’s reading. I started to pick up the scattered sheets to [...]

Heat Wave

I’m onboard with the concept of breaking records but enough already with this heat wave. When I listen to the weatherman at night and he starts talking about the “dome of high pressure” that settles over Texas I begin to have nasty flashbacks to all the things I hard to learn about meteorology to write [...]
